HIS LAST DREAM

On a sunset colored forest where a rain veil covered the white painted trees. A young man stood paralyzed to the unique looking place for it seemed like a forest but the smell in the air had the fragrance of the ocean. There was a poignant rain that could penetrate anyone’s bones except his; strange since his breath had a shape in that freezing looking place. His uncovered hands felt the liquid that he could only describe as warm but with a soft texture as if it was snow. He didn’t remember how he got to be in that place; he could barely remember his name and any other label that might have been imposed on him by society. Very odd for him to think of the place as bizarre when he could barely remember where he came from. He thought that maybe he had some sort of brain trauma; maybe he was asleep because he didn’t feel any pain whatsoever. He rapidly checked himself for injuries or as to feel anything out of the ordinary, but his perspective of the environment was the only thing uncommon to find.

The only thing accompanying his soul and body were his common black clothes with the exception of an old looking red scarf. He wore a short sleeve shirt, and some formal looking pants, he check these and found a cigarette in his right pocket and an insignificant lighter on his left pocket.  Just when he was about to light the cigarette he heard some noise behind a leafless tree. Still holding the cigarette with his right hand he followed the noise to find IT. The man first had to rub his temples with his right wrist because the tree changed colors to magenta in a matter of seconds.  Unbelievable to him but more importantly, he moved his sight to IT very confused. IT wasn’t wearing much clothing and seemed to be freezing since IT was shaking uncontrollably. IT saw him and asked “Aren’t you cold?” The man slightly surprised at the fading magenta color disappearing from the tree that he was seen with his peripherals. He faced IT while cautiously placing his arm on the tree and with a slight grin asked IT “Are you alone?”

IT didn’t like a question as a response for its question and said in a sarcastic tone “Not anymore!” The young nameless man didn’t have any use for his old scarf and gave it to IT without a second thought. IT stared at him in surprise and used the scarf by wrapping it around its neck. “I don’t feel cold anymore… Who or what are you?” The man smiled and said “I don’t quite remember my name, but I guess you can call me MAGIC.”

IT didn’t quite get the conceited joke and strangely enough IT jumped out and started walking. Ignoring the guy until IT was some steps away from him IT spoke: “MAGIC…Well, I am IT… thanks for the scarf and…” IT turned around and with a very mandatory voice asked “AREN’T YOU COMING?! I shall show you the way out. You know…it is to return the favor.”

The man who followed IT with his eyes couldn’t help but to laugh “My name is not MAGIC, and what sort of name is IT?” In return to his words, IT ran back and hit the guy on his right shoulder making the cigarette fall. “You are not the only one whose memory got erased in this place! AND…AND…” IT slightly embarrassed to the occurrence and somewhat due to the cold, had lack of words and after a short moment of silence IT could verbalize words once again. While pointing to its chest with its left dumb, IT proudly said “Well, since you don’t have a better name you are MAGIC to me.”

“I can come out with a better name than that, for me and for you…” the man replied somewhat superciliously but stopped talking at the sight of IT; who made a fist while staring at him with cold eyes. “Fine, you are IT and I am MAGIC” He said while picking up his wet cigarette. IT started to run to the horizon and MAGIC doubt if this IT really had any idea on where they were going, but since he didn’t have much clue on what to do he just followed IT after dropping his useless cigarette to the wet ground.

After who knows how much time it passed MAGIC had to ask “Do you really know where you are going?” while scratching his head while IT sighted and responded “I do. You are not the only one who I have shown the way out.”

“Way to make me feel special” He said sarcastically while stopping since IT also stopped. “Time to sleep” IT said after yawning. “It is not night and I am not tired” MAGIC told IT for time didn’t felt as having been passed just like the distance for the view was basically the same. In return IT said “I am not moving farther until I get some sleep and just for your information, night doesn’t exist over here.”

IT tried to find a dry place to sleep after going off the path they were walking, after some steps further into the forest, a silver looking lake could be seen. The water looked as if it was evaporating for steam could be seen emanating from it. Wet grass around, but with iced sharp peaks coming from the ground was the panorama around the lake. “There is nowhere dry to sleep. I guess we will have to sleep in or on the lake, which one would you prefer?” IT asked while the man raised one of his eyebrows and thought ‘IT must be either joking or I must be really dreaming.' Without hearing a loud response IT started walking towards the lake “On the lake it will be” IT concluded.

-“You have to be kidding me, you actually mean NEAR the lake, right?”

-“I didn’t, everything is wet and it is still raining. The most logical place to sleep in is ON the lake.”

-“NO, the most logical place to sleep in not ON the lake at times like these…”

-“IN the lake it would be too noisy.”

-“I can see that due to the droplets of the rain…but still ON the lake?”

IT smiled and giggled “You actually thought about it, didn’t you MAGIC?” He did and wondered why since it didn’t make any sense whatsoever. It is not like he knows precisely if it would be strange to sleep on or in a lake for he didn’t have any memory. It didn’t also make sense if he were to decide if he was either dreaming or in a different world, otherwise he would be force to adapt to the rules of that world and to compelled to the inhabitants’ customs if he were to choose the latest option. Not much point in questioning. “Instinct that is all” He said.

By this point both of them were at the edge of the lake, “MAGIC, if I were to tell you to jump. What would your instincts tell you to do?”

-“IT, my instincts tell me to only do it after you do it first.”

-“Good instincts.”

IT jumped to the lake and in slow motion to the man, the spirit slowly landed on the lake making its way around the haze.

-“MAGIC, now if I were to tell you to come with me.What would your instincts tell you to do?”

-“My instincts say nothing, I’ll say I trust you and go my way.”

- “Unreliable instincts you have… tsk tsk tsk”

The man didn’t jump, but simply walked on the surface and made his way to where IT stood. As he was walking he noticed things shining underneath the surface. Each water drop that vanished from the rain was incorporated into the frozen looking water, but it wasn’t the drops that were shining in the surface. MAGIC kneeled down and carefully observed what his eyes couldn’t believe. Instinctively after recognizing the phenomenon, the man looked up to search for the cosmically ornaments that usually are on the sky at night. Slowly without been able to see any, his sight came down where IT was waiting.

“It can’t be” He thought while moving towards IT. “Why are you starring everywhere, MAGIC? Something wrong?” IT asked, as if having the moon trapped underneath a lake was something ordinary, like stepping on a mere reflection in a puddle.

“The sky has been trapped in the lake” He replied while pointing out with both hands at the lake.

“Well, yeah…It has been like this since….I don’t know…Always” A giggle came out of IT after remarking the fact in a sarcastic way.  To this reaction the man raised his left eyebrow in slight disapproval. IT felt an aura full of antipathy coming from MAGIC and to smooth the mood; IT decided to invite him to jump into the lake.

“MAGIC, would you like to swim in the lake? We can rest afterwards.”

IT didn’t know if that would please the young man who seemed to be annoyed by the situation, and IT smiled to him to at least appease him a little. In reply, MAGIC stomped on the glass looking floor but this one stayed firm and didn’t break or crack.  IT puzzled by the man’s actions said “You don’t have to take your anger on the lake…”

-“I did not take my anger on the lake. I just want to know how we are supposed to swim in this solid lake, if it doesn’t break or melt.”

“Melt?” IT asked not knowing what the man was talking about, but IT remembered that there was no time to waste. IT ran to MAGIC, grabbed his hand and took him to the center of the lake where a dull motionless moon could be seen on the surface. “We don’t have much time if we want to swim, just follow me and you will see” IT told MAGIC while both of them moved. MAGIC didn’t know what to think or believe, for he thought at first that the lake was frozen and it felt solid as an unbreakable rock.

IT took a deep breath and let all the air come out of its lungs afterwards, then IT faced MAGIC and told him “We have to jump in the lake, okay? Are you ready?”

MAGIC had an ambiguous expression on his face but before asking where exactly to jump to. IT grabbed both of his hands and jumped as high as possible. In a matter of a fraction of a second MAGIC had a bunch of questions in his mind ‘What is IT doing? Do I jump too? Should I let go of IT?’ but his body acted automatically and unconsciously MAGIC also jumped following IT behind for just a second.

They didn’t touch the floor like MAGIC expected, instead they were inside the lake and surrounded by water.

“I told you, see~ we were able to jump INTO the lake” IT told MAGIC who incredibly could hear IT perfectly as if they could communicate by telepathy. “Told me what, exactly?” MAGIC responded while IT let go of his hands and started to swim away from him.

He looked down and could have easily swum to the bottom of the lake, where he could see plenty of starfish, normal plantae and marine life. He smiled at the normality of the place, his anxiety lessen as fast as his body recognized the usual feeling of water. IT knowing MAGIC wasn’t following turned around and yelled at him again “Are you staying there or are you coming?!” MAGIC fascinated by the panorama didn’t pay attention to what could have been the top priority…air.  He swam to where IT was waiting but while doing so, he had to look up.

The starry sky was trapped in the reflection of the surface instead of the lake this time. It looked as if it was high up and nothing like it looked on the other side of the surface. Has it always been this way? Are the stars and the moon painted on both sides of a coin?

MAGIC and IT swam to where only fluorescent light coming from corals was the only source of illumination. Everything colored in hues of blue filled the view, white algae reflected light and the ones covering rocks could have been mistaken for snow, and even many marine plants seemed to be trees covered in ice under an icy weather. Fish swam as if dancing under a frozen rain, while distantly the sound of dolphins could be heard as if it were a sweet melody, the rhythm could not be other than the echo of the waves crashing on rocks. Seahorses sang the chorus while the main singer was no other but the sea itself.

IT danced to this unique song while MAGIC just contemplated the here-and-now moment. Breathing in fact was forgotten since MAGIC forgot about air and the sensation of drowning.  It was a long lost sentiment that IT experienced before. It didn’t matter anymore and just like this, time passed as a warm wind that embraces a person just seconds before disappearing into oblivion during autumn.

Purple and pin jellyfish gathered up around them until unexpectedly they swam rapidly to the opposite direction as if running away from something. Then, IT remembered about time and said “Shit! MAGIC we have to leave! Swim as fast as you can to the moon!” MAGIC saw the concern on ITs face and not only that, but also the marine life aggressively moved everywhere as if something terrible was about to happen. The young man swam very fast even faster than IT, for his body could not forget his formidable experience as a swimmer. When he left IT behind he had to look back and just about to go grab IT, he saw a deep darkness following them. He felt unease and helped IT go back to the surface; MAGIC pushed IT up and contemplated the darkness coming fast to them. IT screamed “Come here or you will be trapped!” MAGIC reacted, pushed himself up, and in seconds he was once again on the frozen looking lake.
